So marketing and its related devices and techniques represent a real danger to the church because they involve meanings that will fundamentally change the very identity of the church. Kenneson and Street capture this conclusion nicely:

We believe that placing a marketing orientation at the center of the church’s life radically alters the shape and the character of the Christian faith by redefining the character and mission of the church in terms of manageable exchanges between producers and consumers. Much that is central to the Christian life will not fit neatly into the management/marketing scheme, and, not surprisingly, these matters are neglected in a marketing paradigm.412

What are we, who live in this mercenary world, who work in a church which has largely capitulated to these corrupting forces, to do? To begin with, we need to recognize the danger, name it, discuss it, and expose it. There is for each one of the tools and structures examined in this chapter an alternative that grows out of the biblical and dogmatic tradition of the church. We need to rediscover, reaffirm, but above all deliberately reapply those principles and procedures to the life and work of the church. In doing so we will begin to undo the commercial disfigurement of the church and start the process of restoring it to its God-intended state of beauty.
